The 2012 Courabyra Chardonnay is one of two single vineyard Chardonnays grown in Tumbarumba. This wine expresses the diversity of vineyard sites throughout Tumbarumba, which rises from 400 to 800 meters above sea level, at the foothills of the Snowy Mountains. Courabyra is situated just Northwest of the Village of Tumbarumba at an altitude of 740 meters above sea level and is amongst the highest altitude sites in not only Tumbarumba, but also the country.
All growing, picking and winemaking decisions are based around expressing this unique sub region.
The Courabyra Chardonnay is sourced from a single vineyard planted in 1981, making it one of the oldest vineyards in Tumbarumba. The Clone is the Penfolds clone and is grown on decomposed granite soils at an average yield of 4 tonnes per hectare. This site produces Chardonnay with very high natural acidity and very small berries.
The winemaking is kept very simple in order to express the high country and the rocky soil origins of the fruit. The fruit was handpicked, whole bunch pressed and transferred to stainless steel for fermentation with indigenous yeast. The wine was then matured on gross lees in tank for 15 months and stirred on a weekly basis. No additives went into to the wine, apart form a small amount of sulphur dioxide prior to bottling.
