Courabyra
Chardonnay

95 Points - James Halliday Wine Companion 2016

"Over and over, to the point of routine, Eden Road proves itself an outstanding producer. This release is straw green and offers lactose, chalk, a flush of white peach, orange rind and both oatmeal and spice complexities."

Background

Courabyra sits at an altitude closing in on 800 meters above sea level and whilst it cant claim to be the highest vineyard in Tumbraumba it is never the less very high. The vineyard is at the top of a valley resulting in sinking cold air rushing through it at night and importantly warm rising air form the bottom of the valley in the morning. The warm air allows the vineyard to ripen quickly during the short days and minimises the metabolism of acids during the evening.
The vineyard was planted in 1981, making it one of the oldest vineyards in Tumbarumba. The Clone is the Penfolds clone and is grown on decomposed granite soils at an average yield of 4 tonnes per hectare.  This site produces Chardonnay with very high natural acidity and very small berries.
